Current Areas for Development
Many South Asian Counties that fall under the LAMIC category have many barriers to mental health provision such as :
- a lack of comprehensive and coherent mental health legislation or lack of frameworks to support such legislation.
- unaddressed or ill-defined areas such involuntary initialization and hospitalisation needs
- outdated understanding of current knowledge in service delivery, for example helping services and professionals to discriminate between mental illness and developmental disabilities
- poor record keeping, monitoring, and training in human rights (both in general and for users of mental health services) leading to ineffective service delivery
- lack of inclusion of updated scientific findings to practice, an overreliance on historical approaches to mental health such a medication and hospitalisation
- stigmatisation
What is needed for these regions is capacity building in mental health research through international collaborations linking basic research to practice.
